Ya, I would imagine the wheels were, at times, rolling, and that would
no doubt change µ, by understating µ, eh? Still, when you work the
data by a least squares analysis you'll see that the y-intercept, or
2µg turns out to be greater than 64. Part a. is just a simple calculus
problem: the time rate of change of momentum or the mass times
the time rate of change of velocity equals the product of the friction
coefficient, mass, and gravity (µmg). Mass, being on both sides, gets
reduced away! Now the chain rule allows one to write the time
rate of change of velocity as the product of the time rate of change
of the distance, x, with respect to time and the time rate of velocity
with respect to x. But the time rate of change of distance w.r.t time
is velocity, so the velocity times the rate of change of velocity with
respect to x now equals µg. Separate the differentials so v dv = µg dx
and integrate both sides - you end up with the equation in part a!
