I wasn't being rude about it... I'm just sick and tired of this same old argument that Saab is making a mistake dumping hatchbacks.
It's not a mistake... It's the RIGHT thing to do in this market. They've obviously done the research so what you and I think right not doesn't really matter does it?
The fastest growing segment of the "near luxury" market that Saab is targeting wants SEDANS. So sedans it will be... The next emerging market is wagons and pseudo-SUV "crossover" vehicles (think Audi A6 Avant/Allroad). Saab will be all over this with the 9-5 SportWagon and next year's rumored 9-3 wagon (probably with AWD).
Since Saab is such a small company that has typically sold around 30,000 cars a year in the US, they needed to change in order to grow sales. Yes, there *IS* a market for hatchbacks, but it's a small one... And it's typically an entry level car (think VW Golf, Ford Focus, etc). The Mercedes hatchback is an experiment for them... (It looks more like a hairdressers car than a Mercedes but that's beside the point)
Wait and see, but I'll bet that Saab's sales will increase DRAMATICALLY with this refreshed lineup... They're looking to emulate Audi (it's been stated several times by Saab execs). Audi went from near death in the US market in 1993 to surpassing Saab by a wide margin... And they did it with the FOUR DOOR A4. It's not even available as a Coupe, and they didn't even have a convertible (which is just now coming out...)
I welcome the change with an open mind...
