I just moved into my parents basement for the summer. There are spiders everywhere, mostly small ones but there are some that are HUGE. Like 3+ inch in diameter. My dad is an entomologist so I dont get much sympathy from him. I will usually just yell or run like hell up the stairs (if I can get past the spider) and he will come pick it up and put it in a jar. The really big ones that are black are either wolf spiders or "fisher" spiders. The fisher spiders are the ones you are likely to see around streams and stuff like that. They like moisture and will sit around the sink in your laundry room. They are friggen huge. I think wolf spiders mostly live out in the grass, and they have a gold mark on their back. Both of them are harmless and if youre bitten it will hurt less than a bee sting (is that a consolation or what?).
My second night sleeping down here in the basement I was awoken by a spider on my shoulder. I had to smash it 3 times in the dark to get it to stop moving cause it got under the covers. After that I slept upstairs for 2 days until I could get the dehumidifier working down here (helps a lot) and some glue traps from Walmart. Glue traps friggen rock! They are boards of cardboard covered with this really sticky glue that does dry out for a few months. You can get a 4 pack of them at Walmart for $1.80 where I live, and they link together so you can form a whole perimeter so you are more likely to catch the spider. I have caught 8 wolf spiders in the past two weeks, as well as a couple roaches, lots of crickets, and millipeeds. Ive got some pictures online if you want to see them. It is a good feeling to be able to fight back. Yes, I am a total arachnaphobic. Thanks for giving me a chance to vent ;)
