Dude! You're getting a Dell!
Seriously, though...you should really consider the Dell Laptops. My lab has had them for years and we swear by them for presentations, graphics-intensive work, and all around fun! For a 1.6GHz with a 30GB hard drive and integrated network, and a combo DVD player/CDRW, a Dell Inspiron 2650 can be had for about $2000 even. You can customize, etc. Go to http://www.dell.com and just look through their notebooks section. If you want easy portability, check out the Gateway 200 series laptops. They start at $1900 with good equipment and they only weigh 3 pounds. But, for your money, a Dell Inspiron will be your best choice. Good luck.
