I suspect that this type of activity does not suit the image SAAB wants to create for itself in North America. I know that that sounds ridiculous to most of us, but it's probably true. In the 1970's and 1980's when Lancia had incredible rally cars (Stratos, 037, Delta S4, Integrale), the British Importer spent a fortune sponsoring "nice" sports like Showjumping and Tennis, but almost went out of it's way to prevent private teams from rallying Lancias in Britain. Even in 1987, when RED tried to run a Delta for Jim McRae (father of Colin, 1995 World Rally Champion with Subaru, now with Ford), Lancar (British Importer at the time) did absolutely nothing to help them, to the extent that they gave up and ran a Ford Sierra instead. When you think of how dominant Lancia were in World Rallying at the time, and that McRae was British Champion with that FOrd from 1987-1989, one sees how blunderous that was. Especially as FIAT decided in 1993 to withdraw Lancia from the Brish market. I don't think that this will end up happening with SAAB, but it's certainly a golden opportunity at some easy publicity that is being missed.
On the subject of Stig, the Ford he drove was a Group B RS200E. He rallied for Ford in the late 1980's, and drove an RS200 in 1986. He now rallies a Skoda.
