The way Saab has the SVC set up is quite similar to how they have the APC set up on older cars - a very high peak boost in the mid-range, tapering out to a substantially lower level at the high-end. This nets big-motor torque (i.e. drivability) with small-motor economy.
The idea behind SVC is *not* power - it's fuel economy. They are attempting to deliver an exciting driving experience while still maintaining excellent fuel economy. In the SVC design, the motor drops to low compression and engages a supercharger to deliver gobs of torque to get you going, but once you've reached cruising speed it loses the supercharger and increases compression to maximize fuel economy. It's a solid design as it neatly skirts a number of engine design issues, including the old argument of forced induction (parasitic loss, low compression) vs. natural aspiration (low torque, good fuel economy).
