Great for Molotov cocktails. For cars, not so good Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 10 Oct 2002 10:50:09 In Reply to: What do YOU think of supermarket gasoline?, Duhey2 [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 10 Oct 2002 09:58:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Not that I in any way endorse the use of Molotov cocktails. But they do make lighting the charcoal grill more fun.
Actually, it all depends. Some big supermarkets chains probably have agreements with fuel distributors, and get consistent quality of fuel. Not great quality, but at least consistent. Smaller markets, and especially the locat Quickie-Mart, take whatever the distributor has cheap.
Gas most definately isn't Gas. Octane rating, additives, and most importantly, HANDLING, make all the difference. Handling, you say? Sure. How often is the tank truck cleaned out? How much water and grit are in the tank? A good dose of water or some dirt and fine sand will take out your fuel injection system. Smaller amounts of water corrode the tank and lines.
I've seen off-brand gas gum up the internals of FI systems - high levels of varnish because the gas isn't quite as fresh as you'd like.
OK, enough of the scare tactics. There is no guarantee that you wont' get a bad tank at Mobil or Chevron. But I think the chances are much lower. With the better known names, I feel I get a level of consistency. Yes, you can save a buck or so on a tank of gas, and that's real money over time. But one bad tank of gas can do some real damage to your car, or just the inconvience of the car acting up some dark rainy night is enough to keep me going to the name brands. Heck, I try and stick with the same stations. If I find one that doesn't give me problems, I stick with them.
