Since I'm in an industry that deals with petroleum (after its been spilled) I know a bit about gas. There is a huge underground gas pipeline (2 or 3 36" pipes) that leads from Houston TX all the way to NY. It was built in WWII in the early 1940s (round the clock install job) to ensure flow of fuel since the Nazis had the nasty habit of sinking our tankers as they sailed from TX around FL up the East Coast. Anyway, one of the main terminals for this pipeline is in Greensboro, NC (where I work). Several of my clients are petroleum jobbers, and what they tell me is this: the gas is the same as it flows from the refinery to the terminal. All of it. Identical. Once it is at the terminal is where the additives, detergents, octane boosters, etc. are added, and of course every petroleum mfr. has their own proprietary blend. The big names use their blends and pickup on a regular basis. Their tankers are used for gas only, there "shouldn't" be any water in the tankers. The water that is found in gas is probably from the UST leaking, allowing groundwater to enter the tank. Anyway, the big jobbers pick up all the time, therefore their fuels are basically consistent in quality. The "Quickie Mart" gas is picked up a bit more sporadically and they sometimes get "leftovers" from one or more majors, depending on supply. Therefore, their quality may be good one week, less so the next. Interestingly, the price changes every night at 6:30 for the following day, so there is a lag time between 6:30 and midnight. You can tell what the price is going to do based on the # of tankers lining up between 6:30 and midnight. If the price is going to go up the next day, more tankers will line up between those hours to get it at the cheaper price so they can sell it for a few pennies more the next day, and increase their profit a little. I heard the local jobbers margin on a gallon of gas is like 2-3 cents at most. The C-stores make their money on the stuff they sell inside. Me: major name gasoline only, 93 octane - Amoco, Texaco, Shell, etc. More than you wanted to know, eh? :-)
