and I wanted, in the worst way, to buy a car in Europe and bring it back to the States on my return. I carefully compared prices of Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar and some other more exotic choices, and found that, after considering shipping costs, there was never enough difference to make it worth the aggravation. At most some cars were 10-20% cheaper in Europe. Sometimes they were, as you say, 10-20% more expensive.
Bear in mind that a car with 75,000 miles in Europe will be much more "used" than one with the same mileage in the US. Distances in Europe are shorter, there is more traffic (especially in England) and more curves, so tires and brakes really take a beating along with exhaust system and engines due to frequent starting and stopping.
There is a cultural difference too, I think. Some Europeans really don't like used cars. They prefer to buy new and hold on to them for 10 years. In England, on the other hand, many people have a company car because of the tax laws making that more economical. There, you have a hard time getting rid of a three-year-old car because there are so many of them, and being right hand drive there is no broader European market for them.
Bottom line is, if I was going to France I would buy a car over there. I would never even consider bringing one from the States.
