$35-70/month is 1/10 to 1/6 the price of a the whole new car payment.
I don't think onstar adds that high a fraction of perceived value to the owner.
I can understand keeping the emergency subscription, but that's not a good long term bet.
Emergency 911 usage of a cell phonse is $0/month. Eventually cell phones will either have GPSs built into them or the cell phone companies will be triangulating our location from our radio signals. This will happen, the cell phone companies are facing federally imposed deadlines to implement this. Then when people call in, they and their coordinate will be routed to the nearest dispatch center. I don't like the idea of cell phone tracking, but I can't change that. Then there is always the prepaid cell phone for people who only want a phone to call their husband or mechanic when they have trouble on the road.
As this nears, Onstar will have to advertise the features of their emergency service, and perhaps add a few new features to differentiate it from a free or lowend cell phone package.
