It really is a good car. If the size is right for his needs, your father will be thrilled with the gas milage and the reliability.
I work in the 2 North American plants that build that car and I have to say it's impressive. They are fanatical about quality and are always looking for ways to improve the process of building the car. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (builds Corolla, Matrix, and Solara) will be the first plant to build a Lexus product outside of Japan. Japan holds that plant in extremely high regard, and there are MANY JD Power banners hanging in their shops to back it up. So, if you like the car (and it is a great car), look for one built at TMMC. Just look at the label inside the driver's door area for "Made in Canada" or similar. The window sticker should say something about Cambridge Ontario as point of final assembly. All the BS you read about at the Big 3 is absent here. People care about what they do, and the people on the line actually get involved at improving processes and workflow.
The Camry plant (Georgetown Kentucky) is equally impressive. They also strive for continuous improvment (Kaizen) and quality. I think it's the largest auto plant in north america in terms of output, but Nissan in Smyrna may beat it.
BTW, the guys in the plants bust my chops for buying 3 SAABS, but I know an I.S. guy who had a volvo, now a BMW. Another drives an Acura RSX. One I.S. guy has a M-B Kompressor.
