if your mom and dad desire a lot more space, safety and comfort, and about the same reliability as the corolla go with the maxima. it has active head restraints, xenon headlamps, proven vq series v-6 engine, and they're also being discounted. VW's are really great driving/handling cars but they tend to be unreliable. i had a 98 passat - a joy to drive, but had more than its share of problems. and 5 of my friends all had vw's, but are now driving some other car makes because they got singhed with too many problems. the accord is all new for 03, and there's also an all new mazda 6, as another post mentioned, soon to be released. those might be worth checking out too. and i agree, toyota's don't have comfortable seats or driving position.
hope that helps.
