I said nothing about my opinion of the new 4. I just said that I really like the old 4, think it's a masterpiece of Saab engineering, and wonder when we're gonna see the most well-developed form of it (if we haven't already).
Yes it was Triumph derived. But it was VERY, VERY significantly developed by Saab, to the point that I think it's ludicrous to claim that any of at least the 16v versions are anything close to the original Triumph motor. In it's modern form, that engine is a Saab engine, not a Triumph one. The 4cyl 2.0/2.3 turbocharged motor is Saab's signature powerplant. Yes, maybe Saab will eventually develop the new GM engine to the same degree (I doubt that, by the way), but for now, by far the definitive motor of Saab's modern automotive history is the 2.0/2.3 of the last 25+ years. I don't believe any of the older engines were developed to anywhere near that extent either, though I don't know much about them. In fact, I can't think of another automotive engine that has this sort of developmental history. Can you? Porsche's air cooled flat 6 maybe?
This engine is arguably one of the greatest mass production motors ever made. Whether or not I like the new one, I love and respect this one. Just because you appreciate something well done from the past doesn't mean you're standing in the way of "progress" in the future.
Cheers,
'Roo
