Some of these arguments remind me of a bicycle freak who told me you can do anything with a bike that you can with a car, including things like a 250 mile weekend ski trip in February.
SUVs (or minivans, for that matter) have their place--and it really depends on your needs. While they are silly (even reprehensible) for solely single-person use, when you need to haul a lot of people/stuff, SUVs make a lot of sense. Here in Southern NH SUVs are everywhere (so are Saabs!) and many people have both (like us). If we aren't carrying a lot of stuff--even for a weekend--we take the Saab. But if we have a lot of gear to haul, like for skiing, kayaking, etc., the Exploder is a helluva lot more practical, comfortable and it will go almost anywhere if used with some care. We don't offroad it, but it does go down some roads I sure wouldn't take a car down.
It's easy to point fingers at the jerks who drive SUVs like they are Porsches, but those people are going to drive the same way whether they are in a car, SUV or minivan. Sure, SUVs have a greater rollover rate, but its usually due to people doing stupid things and assuming the laws of physics don't apply to them.
Just out of curiosity, how many people reading this thread have families and how many don't? Having 2 or 3 rug rats to haul around changes your vehicle needs big time.
