I was going to stay quiet, but couldn't resist....
Ok, for one, SUV's are not designed for off-road. Just ask any four wheeler; independant suspensions, no locker, junk lsd's, no low range transfer cases, and the ground clearance of a Subaru doesn't make it off-road capable. They are designed to haul stuff, a lot of stuff; like say my 3 kids (in booster seats), my in-laws, myself and my wife out for dinner. Granted mostly it is just her driving it, but it does get used that way often.

As for the Stats on my wife's Acura MDX SUV, which seats 7, comparing it to a typical car; Honda Accord EX V-6 (taken from C&D Road Test Digest):
Handling: The MDX pulls 0.74 on the skidpad; the Honda Accord also has 0.74g
Braking: It is an issue for a heavy car, but the MDX stops 4 feet shorter than that same Accord.
Acceleration: MDX 0-60/.25mile = 8.4s/16.6, Accord EX v-6 =7.0/15.5
Emmisions: MDX = ULEV-2 Accord =ULEV-2
MPG: MDX = 17/23, Accord = 21/30

So basically, the MDX is every bit as good as the Accord and only sacrifices some gas mileage (4-7mpg)and acceleration in exchange for about 62 cubic feet (or 5 times more) of additional cargo volume. The SUV's you must be thinking of are older ones like my old Scout II.

I'm not sure where you got your "SUV driver as socially aggressive, self-centered, appearance concious, and enviromentally irresponsible" facts, but my guess would be from some sort of tree hugger pamphlet. Those statements come closer to matching me with my "look at me" Monte Carlo Yellow Viggen.....

Later,
Chris Fisher

Oh, and BTW the BMW X5 will out accelerate, corner and stop better than my Viggen. Welcome to the future......
