I've had Saabs as far back as a '67 96 2 stroke. V-4s, 99s, 900s, a 9000. But now I'm driving a 9-5. Why? It has the Saab qualities of a great ride, efficient yet powerful engine (2.3LPT - consistent 30mpg), excellent ergonomics, safety, and room inside. The Audi A6 and BMW 5s feel cramped in comparison. And it has one other thing that previous Saabs didn't... an excellent transmission (manual, of course).
A good friend is bringing back his 2000 9-5 wagon.. the lease is over. It has 96K miles on it. It is still perfect. It rides beautifully. Has plenty of power. He put 48K miles on it each year, and said he "loved the car". Never has any trouble with it. But Saab couldn't offer him a decent lease deal on a new Saab, and he got a BMW 5 series wagon instead (apparently they are offering killer lease deals in Dec.). But the point is that even though he drove almost 100K miles in just 2 years, the car feels like a new car. That's something you don't get with anything but the better European makes.
I'd say go for the 9-5 wagon. It still, at least, has the real 2.3L Saab engine, unlike the 9-3SS which has the GM Global 4. It may be your last chance.
