Drove the Civic. It was slow, perhaps too slow for the on-ramps of the freeways I commute on. Really no fun. Drove pokily but acceptably in the city.
What I want in a hybrid car is:
A no-nonsense >100HP electric drive system. Forget the silly combo internal combustion/electric drives.
A fuel burner that can use any fuel-diesel, gasoline, alcohol... Something like a sterling engine or even a simple steam engine (these can be very compact with modern materials). The fuel burner only needs to supply about 35HP continuously.
An automatically shifted transmission system. It doesn't make sense to manually shift electric motors. Because induction motors can work over 3:1 speed ranges efficiently and operate naturally forward or reverse, driving or braking, the gearbox could be a simple 3-speed with no reverse.
My dream layout would be four 25HP electric motors and separate control electronics and swiching transistors, and four small transmissions set up to independently power each wheel. Disc brakes are fitted only to the front wheels, inboard. The electric drives do the majority of braking, regenerating electrical power, and handle all antilock braking and anti-slip operations. And make those shock absorbers the new electrically-controlled damping type.
I'm getting a little worked up-I'll stop now.
