I have a 2 stage MTD with chains on the tires, multispeed trans and headlights, and it normally sits in the garage. While it works OK for 2 foot dumps, I usually use my single stage Snapper Sno-pup. The Snapper cleans the surface right down to bare pavement and can handle up to about a foot with no problem. 2 stroke engine always starts. Parts are available and over the years, I have replaced the impeller and the drive side impeller bearing. I bought this used 5 years ago and it is just a pleasure to use and maintain(Saab-like).
The big 2 stage is fun to crank up for a big storm, but it leaves about 1/8" of snow and goes through impeller belts pretty fast. I always end up using the sno-pup to put the finishing touches on the job.
