Note that I'm limiting the comment to the big 3, er, make that the big 2 US auto makers. Based on independant (outside) industry analysis, there's money LOST on the compacts, and as much as 5-figure profits on full-size SUVs.
That doesn't mean nobody can make a profit on small cars, but I can't think of any car company that doesn't eventually get into larger, more luxurious models (just look at Hyundai). That's where the margins are.
I don't see any way that GM will make money on a Saabaru, given their recent track record. A 9-2 will generate some showroom traffic and sell a few more 9^3s, but it seems like a distraction to me.
