by GM into building AWD. Per a former SCUSA President, the engineering-driven Saab had made "numerous studies" of AWD and always found the meager gains in mobility it offered over FWD was not worth the cost in terms of weight, space, complexity, fuel use, not to mention price. Tell that to the SUV owners of the world. The only ones who would listen are those sitting upside down in the ditch wondering why that always happens when the power is transferred "from the wheels that slip to the one wheel that had grip"
BTW, the 5-door, AWD 9-3 crossover is planned for release in late 2004 as a 2005 model. 2004 is the convertible's turn. Whether there will be a bobbed-tail coupe, like the concept car, is unknown; also unknown is whether the 5 door 9-3 will have an "X" in its name.
