I have to wonder how much you really know about the Disco....it is a full time AWD vehicle with 4 wheel traction control, which operates on- and off-road in both high and low ranges. No buttons necessary. In 4 LOW the gear selector will lock any selected gear when the mode button is selected.
If you are referring to the "slow the vehicle below 5mph/ shift to neutral/ shift to 4LOW/ shift into gear" procedure.....yes that is more awkward than a button. But it's not a difficult process, and it's only used for selecting low range, not 4wd. How often does that actually occur on any trip? A mechanical shift mechanism does not have the push button convenience that soccer moms might need. It also has no electrical components to fail and leave you starnded in the woods.
That's why the 4 LOW selector is designed as it is - for reliability.
The turning radius could be smaller - that is correct. On a SWB vehicle, one would expect better.
There is one neat button no one has mentioned. Hill Descent Control is cool and a very worthwhile feature.
And as far as being the family car of choice - that is the "Land Rover image" - many folks buy them and never get them dirty. However, a large percentage (exceeded only by Jeep owners) do go offroad. The best thing about soccer Moms and LRs is that those vehicles make great buys after the lease is up, for someone who wants a serious off-road truck.
A new Defender is rumored to be headed to the USA in a few years. The Defender uses the same 4WD select mechanism as the Disco.
BTW, rolled your Trooper yet? ;) A Disco may look top heavy, but it is very stable on a 45% side slope.
