I have of course moved on to the brilliant Mac OS X, but use Mac OS 9 on client's computers. I do not mean to call you a liar or insult your intelligence, but I just tried to replicate your issue on an old iBook and when I am typing in a text box in Internet Explorer, the delete key (backspace) is correctly mapped and deletes text. If the insertion point is not in the text box, the browser will move back a page into history when the delete (backspace) key is pressed. So, I would suggest trashing your Internet Explorer preferences and updating to the latest version of Internet Explorer for Mac OS 9, version 5.1.6. And, this may sound silly, but do you have Mac OS 9.2.2? You should.
