I just tried IE on OS 9 and OS X... BOTH of them map the backspace key to "page back" when you're not in a text edit field. And low and behold... Safari does the same thing! (Apple copied the wrong guy's homework).
I'm VERY against single key shortcuts for this very reason... They conflict with text edit operations! That doesn't stop a lot of developers (especially for digital video editing apps) from mapping single keys to operations.
The worst offense is using the Space bar to start and stop the video. Just imagine the hell that raises when you're in a text edit field and you want to start/stop playback or else you REALLY want a space! It never "does what I want!" ;-)
