It's true... most buyers are going for the drive train... I think any discussion of affordability is probably keeping that in mind (affordable when considering it is a luxury car with an electric drive train)... obviously that is not for everyone either...
but aside from that, the large hatch format was not something that was widely available at reasonable cost... sure there are minivans and wagons and SUV's but until recently there were not too many "sedan-like-things" that could swallow a dishwasher... the 9000 was an exception which of course is now long gone... I actually was slow to get interested in that sort of vehicle, but it's probably the form we'd go for in a next car... most options are fairly pricey: BMW, Audi, Panamera... what else? Though now asian manufacturers are getting on board (Honda Civic, Kia)... so maybe there are some true middle class options in that format now.
