Growing up we had one with FWD break a tranny. It didn't just break, it electrically malfunctioned while we were driving and then broke.
At work, just had a '93 FWD caravan break the tranny. Just old age and lots of mileage and probably a little neglect. fluid was all over the parking lot and it couldn't be fixed cheaply.
One of the guys at work had a similar vintage AWD caravan, leather seats, fake wood paneling, whatever they call the upscale version. Lots of mileage and very reliable.
ANY dodge caravan is awesome in the snow if you put snow tires on it. Not bad without.
Make sure it's got a good windshield. A '91 won't be expensive, but as the windshield got more raked/cab forward, and included antenna, they got real expensive, like >$1000.
The 4cyl version is probably among the most fuel efficient haulers on the road. I used to be able to drive from Rockland ME to worcester MA and back on a tank of gas. That's 7 hours of driving. The small V6 is pretty good on gas, the big V6 isn't as good, but still isn't bad for the capabilities. It's one of the rare cars that can hold more than a Saab 900 classic.
