I dunno... the 2.3-16 was initually built to compete in WRC, but after the UrQuattro dominated that Benz shifted the focus of the car to compete in road-racing, namely BTCC and DTM. It has a pretty solid racing pedigree and the production versions were homologation units... Power advantage notwithstanding, I'd be pretty doubtful that a 9-3 would be overly daunting on a track. The Benz has a drivetrain advantage (RWD) and a substantial weight advantage (~2800lbs - that's at least 400lbs) to its credit...
I've not spent more than a test drive in a 190E 2.3-16, but these cars competed directly with E30 M3s, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find something negative to say about them... They still do well.
