since I have Cayman and Boxster fanatasies. And I wouldn't mind a Z3 or Z4, M3 or M5 (yow!) in the driveway, either. But those are cars.
But while a Cayenne is a powerful, great handling SUV, it's not really a Porsche to me--sort of like air-cooled 911 purists think of the 928/924/944. Plus I think it's medium ugly. The X5 is nicer and it does have all the typical BMW traits, and looks good too.
But I admit I'm biased because I just don't like SUVs. Even when we owned one, it was for the practical aspects of it and my wife (who drove it most of the time) was thrilled to drive off in her 9-5 wagon when we got it last year. And no, we wouldn't still have an SUV if we'd gotten one of the German ones.
Because you have sold the Bimmers you have a much better sense of who is buying these things than I, who only can observe and talk to some people who drive them. I don't doubt that some people driving X5s and Cayennes are car guys, but my impression is that many X5/Cayenne owners buy them because they can and because the cars are different than the typical SUV. Nothing wrong with that. LOTS of people buy all kinds of top shelf cars because they can.
And car enthusiasts who can't DO have a certain amount of envy. (Guilty as charged!)
