IME Mercedes are in a whole different class of pricey - up there with Porsche and the like. Stuff on Saabs is more than a Chevy, but no more than most Hondas or Toyotas. The other thing keeping costs high on Benzes are how early they adopted technology - an '88 should have ABS and airbags and a host of gizmos, and those very early systems can be problematic. Standard consumables aren't over-the-top expensive, but other items you can expect need attention on a 20 year old can are. On the upside, Benzes are well built and more often than not well cared for, so the chances of finding a real basket case are pretty low.

The SECs are absolutely sick cruisers... I nearly bought a 500 myself last year. Giant, pointless coupes are just so sexy... er, handsome?
