Yep, there's a lot of scary Boxster stuff out there on the forums. The IMS failures get the most press lately. Who knows what to believe? Some claim 20% failure rate, others say it's more like 1%. When the shaft does go the engine can't be rebuilt, and it's $12k for a new one. Porsche has been helping some people out of warranty, but it's inconsistent. You're either OK with the risk or you aren't.
I bought a CPO so I've got two years of peace of mind. What drives me crazy are the owners who buy one and then spend their lives complaining about unreliability or cost of repairs/maintenance (10 quarts of synthetic every oil change!). On the forums they are usually advised to "buy a Toyota".
Prices are excellent for used ones right now. I've only had mine for two months and 1000 miles (250 of which were driving it home from NH), so I don't have a lot of personal experience to share. A good friend has leased three of them since 1997 and has never had a problem with any of them. I've read posts from people who have 200k+ trouble-free miles, and others who have had two engine failures in 50k.
IMO, nothing in the price range can match the sound and feeling of revving it past 4000, 5000, 6000 rpm, the handling is amazing, and the brakes ... Holy $#!%! And I find myself running my hand along it in the garage.
Don't know if any of this helps. The car spoke to me and I had to have it. My area has many Porsche indys (the place that just changed my oil had one of Seinfeld's cars in the garage), and the PCA is a great club offering all kinds of driving/racing events as well as technical support.
Good luck with your decision.
