News from Toyota keeps getting worse....... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 04:08:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
- An additional 1 Million vehicles added to the recall list.
- Recall expanded to vehicles sold in Europe and China.
- Car Rental companies are pulling all Toyotas from their fleets.
- List of models that cannot be sold by US Dealers may be expanded beyond the initial eight.
I work in an engineering office that supports the infrastructure found in automotive manufacturing and assembly facilities. The collective wisdom of our office is that the problem is far more serious than floor mats or throttle pedals. Toyota's claim that the problem is isolated to throttle pedals made in one Canadian factory owned by an Indiana based company doesn't seem plausible when you compare it against the breadth of the recall. Do all Toyota vehicles use the same throttle pedal? Why only 2009 and newer? Wouldn't Europe and China market vehicles be made outside the US and have a different part supplier?
Our "guess" is the root cause of this problem is a major glitch in the engine control software. A change to some minor sub-routine implemented to meet either fuel efficiency or environmental regulations which took effect in 2009, and used in all vehicles, seems to be the likely culprit. But even this violates the common belief that all vehicle and engine combinations have their own software program. Unless the software code is so seemingly minor that it has become ubiquitous; such as the "Resume" feature on Cruise Control equipped vehicles.
Can you imagine the devastation this would cause to any of the other auto manufacturers who don't have Toyota's incredibly deep pockets? No manufacturer or auto enthusiast should be resting easy and feeling relieved that this isn't happening to them.
