Engine in front, tranny in back. The long stick of mass, long polar moment of inertia makes the car less susceptible to spinning, the exact opposite of the 914 with it's rear central engine tranny package. You wind up having incredible feel for the control of either end at the limit as the high polar moment of inertia slows things down and makes the car very forgiving at the limit. Adds straight line stability too.
And I second joining the PCA, the largest and one of the greatest vehicle clubs in the world. Few if any marques can matches Porsche's history of sports cars and racing success or body of enthusiastic loyal owners.
