oh, ok, yeah if you're keen to do some work yourself, then with wis + saabnet, that is the cheapest way to go + satisfying as well. I'm doing a fair bit of that myself these days... in that case, having a second car (if the other is down for a while while you work on it) is fairly critical...
I had a c900 engine rebuilt (burnt valve on holiday) by a rural mechanic (my parents use) who'd never dug into a Saab engine before. I got him the parts, he figured it out + did the work. Our Saab indy looked it over when we got back, he said it looked perfect. No problems since. But the guy was patient, open minded, and found it a genuinely interesting job. Finding the right guy to work on it is key. Tech2 seems to not be too critical, at least for OG 9-3 and 9-5. What you don't want is the guy who gets all grouchy because "the engine's in backwards" or "it's not a chev"... can normally tell from talking to them for a couple minutes...
