We have owned 7 full size trucks over the years. I prefer a standard cab/long box, but our latest truck was an 06 Dodge quad cab/long box (4wd diesel). The quad cab isn't a real crew cab, but the back seat was fine for shorter trips, and was a lot better than the club/extended cab trucks with the rear hinged back doors. It also provided lots of inside cargo space with the seats folded up.
My main gripe with the current crop of crew cab trucks is that they almost always have a short bed, in some cases less than six feet, which really makes them poor for carrying cargo, which is what I thought a truck was for.
Because we don't haul very much any more, we sold the Dodge earlier this year and bought an 08 Porsche Cayenne (V6/six speed stick). The Cayenne is much more comfortable and handles way better than the big Dodge truck. It also has a much more sophisticated four wheel drive system. To carry cargo, I bought a 6.5 by 12 foot aluminum utility trailer. It's much easier to load than a truck bed, carries more stuff, and I can unhook it when we don't need it.
I share your opinion of the Ridgeline (and similar such things).
I think if I was buying a new pickup these days, I would look at the F150 with the turbo V-6. However, I prefer a manual transmission (all of our trucks were sticks except for one Chevy, which I regretted buying almost immediately), and as far as I know they are almost totally gone now, except for a couple of base model compact trucks, and the Dodge/Ram diesels. What is the world coming to when you can't get a truck with a stick shift?
Good luck with your search.
