John,

We had a 2006 Mazda5 with 3 kids. Full disclosure, we jut got rid of it, partly due to differences that wouldn't have been an issue in the 2012. (we had a carsick-kid and there was no rear air in '06)
I did a test-fit at an auto show when we had only 2 kids, and I'm 6'2", so I sat in the 3rd row, and adjusted the seats for me to fit, then 2nd row, and then I could drive with 'me' in the rows behind. Turns out at 6'2" I needed less room than some larger carseats! - especially rear-facing car seats are HUGE.
We played around with fit, ended up having our 6YO climb in through the trunk to get in the 3rd row. I was not concerned about the proximity to the rear window, due to airbags, and many other crossovers have the same issue (Explorer and many others).

What was an issue for us was 3 kids plus stuff for vacation made it hard to get out of the 3rd row, with the other 1/2 of 3rd row packed. Also, even getting around a large stroller was sometimes a challenge.
I had NO troubles around-town, but most of our miles traveling to see family out-of-state or acations.
We ended up with a hitch rack to hold our clothes in rubbermaid totes!

Agree with others, narrow carseats can be better for having more storage space in the trunk of something like a 9-5 (Radian Sunshine Kids is one narrow seat, other websites have suggestions on seats that 'puzzle well' to get 3 to fit).
There is no 'best for all situations' car, find what works for your needs, and best of luck.
