Yeah, the great lease rate was particularly attractive given the state of the industry. I really did not want to end up in 2019 with an unmaintainable or irrelevant car. "Throwing away" $3000 over three years and not having to even think about the future seemed like a defensible move. If it turns out that technology stagnates and the car doesn't have any apparent maintenance concerns we can always get another one or buy out this one. OTOH, if it turns out that lithium ion batteries and 240v charging are hilariously antiquated, it won't be my problem. ;) Tesla should have the Model X out by then, and if the X is anywhere near as disruptive as the S has been, I'll probably want to hitch up my wagon there. ;)
On the subject of 240v charging, I found out there is a Federal tax credit available for PEV charging equipment through the end of this year. 30% (up to $1,000) comes back to me, so I should be able to get a 240v (four hour) charger installed for well under a grand. That'll eliminate any anxiety about daily driving this thing, since it's a guaranteed overnight charge. With 120v charging, it takes about 22 hours for a full charge, so putting 100 miles on it on Day 1 would likely preclude driving it Day 2. With the "level 2" charger, that's no longer a concern.
Although, it should be noted, we did research public chargers prior to pulling the trigger. There's a free one in her office's parking lot, a $1.50/hr one a block away, and several free ones within walking distance of the places she goes downtown. I like the safety margin of full overnight charging, but it's nice to know there are plenty of cheap/free options in all the places she goes too.
