It's all speculation right now, we just know they'll have to levy road taxes in that arena "some day" -- whenever "some day" will be.
Of course when you factor in the cost of buying the car, almost any cheap old vehicle in decent shape is going to come out ahead dollar-wise, though you'll wind up spending much more time under the hood of course.
Even if the cost of gas doubles it will probably still be cheaper for me to continue driving my old C900 or 9000, or even buy an old 9-5 (probable next car), than to buy a new electric, hybrid, or conventional fuel-efficient vehicle. (The advertised price of a 500e is, what, about $32,000 I think? That will buy a lot of gas!)
Like I said though the idea of a maintenance-free car is definitely a tempting thing.
