Totally agree with Craig on the Cruze vs. 3 - both nice cars, but for different reasons. The Mazda is clearly the sportier of the two, but I think the Cruze is slightly roomier and gets slightly better gas mileage. For a basic commuter I'd probably lean Cruze, but for anything else I'd probably lean 3. One future consideration, though, is resale value. The Cruze will probably get slaughtered and the 3 notsomuch. For a short-term ownership, your money is probably better spent on the 3.
That said, I don't think I'd buy either of them. The current 3 is slow BLAH compared to the first gen car, and the Cruze was blah from day one. I would strongly look at Ford's offerings, and if price is a real consideration but you aren't a zombie, you simply can't overlook the Fiesta ST in the bang-for-the-buck category. Again, though, like Craig said, Ford should probably only be on the table if you want a manual - the dual clutch is a suck pile.
You're lucky to be shopping for this car now - despite the Cruze being a little snoozy, there simply isn't a genuinely bad car in this segment right now. Hyundai would love to sell you an Elantra or Veloster and those are totally decent cars too! :)
