If the brake fluid is not changed often enough, it gets damp and the MC bore rusts, and deposits form and grow in the parts of the bore that are not swept during normal operation. When bleeding brakes or advancing pistons after replacing pads/rotors, the soft rubber cup seals in the MC will be cut by the rust deposits with long petal strokes. The MC then starts to fail, sometimes slowly, with events where the brake goes to the floor and does not work. Those (dangerous) intermittent events then further cut the cup seals on the deposits.

So never stroke the brakes to the floor. Putting a piece of 2x4 behind the petal to limit travel during maintenance is a very good idea.

One should suction out the fluid from the MC reservoir and replace with fresh fluid every year and also before bleeding to avoid pumping damp fluid throughout the system. Use a 2 ounce, 60cc, syringe with some vinyl 1/8" ID tube and get some small 1/8" aluminum OD tube from the hardware store, or something similar in plastic, and that can get into the obstructed reservoir compartment.

Caliper pistons do not get moisture contamination via their seals. But as Jak suggests, there can be crud from wear. I do like to push the caliper pistons back to get the moist fluid in the lines near the MC, pushed back for fluid renew in the reservoir. So there does seem to be some competition for dealing with two different types of contamination.
