front intercooler for a 99

Hi all,
I just wanted to collect some thoughts on redoing an intercooler on a '78 99 - I have a replica of the original airdam, which leaves precious little room, but if I cut a hole in the fron tof the airdam, I could probably squeeze a smallish intercooler back behind it (I would have to change the mounts a little).
My question is this: I have seen plenty of auctions for smaller intercoolers, say in the 6 x 18 x 2 range, which is about what would fit back there. The surface area is doesn't seem all that different from the original c900 intercooler, but I am still wondering if it would be a worthwhile change - It would at least get the IC out from behind the radiator, but is the surface area too small for the effect to be worth the effort?
