Hey guys-
Wow, what a debate! No question there are better oils than mobil 1 - I use amsoil when it's available, and in my Viggen I'll try and use it exclusively. On the other hand, I've been using Mobil 1 in all my cars (Saab and otherwise, some modified, some stock), my father's been using Mobil 1 in all his cars, etc...I had the top end off my Thunderbird Turbocoupe (for a headgasket and timing belt at 85k), which has had nothing but Mobil 1 it's whole life, and the cam had absolutely no wear. Additionally, the guy I bought my Viggen from was a technician w/Caterpillar construction equipment who had the oil (Mobil 1) analyzed over 3 changes (9-10k miles) by his friends at the company, and the results all came back clear, no breakdown. Now, the key here as far as I can tell is that Mobil 1 (at least in my experience, and it seems like the common thread here) is perfectly fine in a car that's not driven hard every single day or that's putting out a ton of power under high boost/compression etc. Also, so many of us with higher performance cars have probably been running Mobil 1 for a long time (since it's probably the most common synth. oil), so these failures may be higher than other oils simply because of the % that use it.
Phew, sorry for the long addition to an already lenghty (and sensitive) subject. For what it's worth, I'll keep running Mobil 1 in my other cars, but I may switch exclusively to Amsoil in my Saabs, at least those that have been modified. Let's keep up the healthy debates!
