wow great post on cam data ! Posted by Saabu [Email] (#1133) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabu) on Tue, 5 Jun 2007 16:49:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm in the process of buttoning up a 2.1 head onto a 2.0 turbo block.
i was lucky enough to find an 85 exhaust cam and a 2.0 NA intake cam at the yard on the same day (the 2.1 head was supplied with a turbo intake cam).
to make sure my cam choices are what i want, i've been doing some research and learning more about these cams.
I found a great post that really points out the evolution in camming Saab went thru over time on the 16 valve engine. here it is:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/performance/index.html?bID=57165
I note that early 16 v engines had wider cam lobe separation (113 degrees) and less overlap (20 degrees) , but come 1987 and after, they'd lowered the separation and increased overlap substantially.
However, towards the middle of the post, the writer puts the numbers down for using the 85 exhaust cam with an NA intake cam and alternatively a Turbo intake cam, but makes mistakes as the 85 T exhaust cam is actually 56 and 16 degrees (not 56 and 10), and the 86 T intake cam is 56 and 16, not 56 and 10.
If one uses the 85 exhaust and any NA intake cams many people have recommended, instead of stock cams from 86+ years, the separation changes from 112 to 107, and the overlap increases from 29 to 32 degrees.
then i read a post from Jak that said he takes advantage and uses slop in the chain between the cam gears as well. In lining up the cam marks i have too much slack between cam gears and may do that as well.
I've also read that the '89 9000 intake cam was worth considering as well, opening later (13 degrees) and closing earlier (53 degrees) but dont necessarily agree that closing later is an advantage...
anyway, any feedback on this would be appreciated.
