Price IS a factor, and as everyone here knows, modifying a car isn't cheap. However, there are deals out there. I got a used system for a great price.
You're also correct that the car will be tuned for water injection. On my c900, I have the timing advanced and base boost increased as well. For safety, I have a float switch that activates a red warning lamp when the tank is 3/4 empty. That alerts me that I'm running low and also gives me plenty of time to a)source some more fluid on the road, b)get home, or c)lay off the boost.
In the event of a failure, the APC system will sense knock and won't allow for more than base boost. For this reason, I don't have my base boost increased to an extreme degree in order to allow some margin of protection in case the system totally fails. Aquamist also makes (an expensive) component that allows the driver to monitor the water flow rate from the cockpit via a gauge.
I have to fill up the windshield washer fluid container about every 800 miles, or so.
