I can't speak for any of your experience, and John W is extremely good with his customer service, but I have only ever had one bad experience with any of the tuner houses which was promptly remedied. Being an enthusiast in such a small community necessitates good customer service, or the company goes under, like several have done in the past few years.

You are definitely correct about the skill of the programmer playing a large part, but experience and intuition about how to quickly address a fault or anticipate a particular hardware or software change is traditionally what you get by paying for a higher dollar tuner with more experience. That's why Frank attracts so many cars to tune at Automotion whenever he comes, and why Jak Stoll is constantly receiving praise from customers who show up wanting another 300 HP but end up discovering a slew of mechanical problems that would have caused problems shortly down the road.

I don't think it can be stressed enough to do your own research when choosing a staged tune or a tuner, and things like location, customer service, and personal conversations the tuner has with you about your goals are all factors.

I will also point out that until very very recently the people who were able to write new tunes were the ones who had developed the method to read and modify the code in the Trionic computers themselves, not a small feat. The fact that some fellow enthusiasts have decided to share their method and provide an inexpensive solution has enabled many more people to come out of the wood work to start producing software, but go look through the archives to see how long it took Mr. Stoll to figure out how to de-compile the LH code for C900's, and how much perseverance it took, then passively insult him again.

Some people's reasons for choosing a tuner are not just peak power, but delivery and personality, records of reliability, etc.

There is never going to necessarily going to be one tune house that will be the 'best,' but there are definitely some who are best at certain situations. It's up to you to find the one who meets your situation the best.

Sometimes that means perservering a bit, and doing it yourself.

Best,
Drew
