I also have an 85 SPG and I have similar goals. My SPG, however, doesn't have the original engine and the one thats in it now needs a rebuild. It Sounds like your SPG is in great shape.
I ran megasquirt for a while but my engine is pretty much dead so I converted back to stock. While on megasquirt I was controlling fuel and spark. I was able to improve the power everywhere. Off boost, on boost, low rpm, and high rpm. I would either go T5 or megasquirt.
The stock t3 is seems very laggy. I heard the Te05 is limited at about 200 hp, but it should spool quicker. There must be new turbos that spool faster than the Te05 and flow more, but it will probably cost you more.
I heard the same thing about the 85 engine. Apparently the head has smaller combustion chambers, and deeper dished pistons. You might want to calculate what the compression would be with the 85 head, and 86-93 turbo pistons. The higher compression should help the low end, but Im not sure how much more it will knock.
To help lag you want to have a short path from the turbo to the throttle body. The downpipe should also help with lag. I thought of lightening the flywheel make the engine more responsive. If you have money to burn consider increasing the displacement and getting forged pistons.
Has anyone gained low end power from porting? I thought porting usually only sees gains at higher rpm at the expense of the low rpm power.
