I would think that the idea behind running a winter oil is start-up viscosity and not running temp./viscosity. I've tried to pry out a dip stick at -45 and it wasn't pretty. This was in my old SPG and I was skiing up in northern Quebec. The oil on that dip stick looked like honey that someone kept in the fridge!
I always plug my car's block heater in when it dips below freezing but without a portable power source that's not always possible.
