Rich,
In the year that I have done the conversion, I have not ran into any trouble with the wiring harnesses nor the sealed beams melting. I am only running Sylvania Silverstars throughout my lighting system which is only stock wattage at 60 watts for high beams. Stock low beam bulbs for your reference run from between 51-55 watts depending on the manufacturer. Definitely do not buy overwattage bulbs which can draw over 80 watts per bulb. I am tried them in the past and they have blown fuses on me. In regards to Trev's response, the increased light output on low does not blind oncoming traffic due to the fact that I have not changed the angle of the sealed beam from stock. For comparison, true HID headlights generate over 3000 lumens and I haven't seen anyone complain about their light output. Also, no one has complained about my light output as well. Yes, they are much brighter than stock but do not blind oncoming traffic provided you don't change the angle of the low beam housing. The least expensive solution would be to purchase the Sylvania Xtravision 9005 bulbs. For a look closer to HID, I went with the Sylvania Silverstar 9005 bulbs.
