Not that tire discussions haven't happened again and again on this board, but somehow even by searching all over the place, I can't find any record of them, so I turn to you brave Saab warriors again for advice...
When I changed the Dunlops of my Y2K Viggen for a set of Yokohama snows (215/45/17) on the original rims, I found to my delight that the acceleration skitter that my beast suffers from (that's what I call that speical Viggen "torque steer" problem for lack of a better term :) was decreased noticably (YES, even AFTER the abbot rescue kit, which reduced it, but only by half)
This confirmed my suspicion that in fact, the stock Dunlops were "Saab-Standard"
:)
I remember reading threads here about performance tires with more compliant side walls, and Michelin Pilots were mentioned quite enthusiastically, as were Bridgestones..but I'll be damned if I remember which ones. I think someone really liked the Pilot MXX, but commented that newer Pilots like the sport and the XGT4 were better in the wet. If that's true, I wonder if these newer pilots are as effective at solving the skitter problem as the Mxx ones are.
Has the group reached a concensus or at least a leaning toward which tires reduce the problem best?
For me, I'd trade lateral grip for more stable-feeling hard acceleration and crisper turn-in if it were a "choose between" situation. And cost isn't a primary concern.
Strangely, in my questions to tire people in the outside world, it seems no one has ever formally created a tire to reduce the problems of front wheel drive, and the manufacturers don't even seems to "recommend" certain tires for high powered front wheel drive cars. Not even enthusiasts seem to know which way to go except to say "more compliant sidewalls"
The other big question, assuming I can find something that reduces it as the yokohamas have, is WHAT size. Some say go wider and lower.. maybe 235/40/17.. others say narrower tires reduce skitter and the tendancy to follow road ruts and offer more "direct" steering feel.
ACK. Is there TRUTH out there somewhwere :>
Sorry for the long post.
