2003 '95 Aero a dog?

Last week I had the opportunity to drive a new 9-5 Aero, with a five-speed transmission.
I was having the transmission replaced in my 97 Aero, so I thought as long as I was there I'd drive a new one.
Much to my surprise the 95 Aero was noticeably slower than my 97. I actually timed the car from 40 to 60 miles an hour. The time was 3.5 seconds. My Aero, at the same temperature, does it in 2.7 seconds. What gives!
I also took the opportunity, to drive a 9-3 Vector. I was even more surprised at how slow this car was. Granted it had an automatic transmission, but with the addition of steering wheel shifters, I would at least expect crisp shifting. This car took a full second to shift gears once the button was pushed. Completely unacceptable! What gives? Surely Saab can do better than this.
I driven similar BMW's were the shifting is almost instantaneous.
I know Saab can do better than this.
If anyone knows what's going on, please let me know.
Thanks, Dave W.
