I have a turbocharged 2.1 NA motor in my '86 900 notchback. It has exactly what you described...the low end pull of a NA with the midrange torque of a turbo. Actually, it feels more like I put a V6 in it...the torque curve is very flat. It gets 30 mpg on the highway, but it is most fun around town. I have the boost limited to 10 psi with a manual boost controller. I have 30K on this drivetrain since I built it (it blew the headgasket 5K into the project, at 12 psi).
Your 99-door should be as quick or even quicker than my 900 2-door with this drivetrain, considering the lower weight of your 99. I also have the small, quick-spooling Mitsu TE-05 turbo and a '91 transmission (3.89:1 final drive, non-turbo primary chain sprockets). My 0-60 time is under 7 seconds. The car would spin through 1st and 2nd gears before I installed Intrax springs and wider tires/wheels.
I hope you are also upgrading to the 88+ 900 (9000 style) brakes!
Good luck,
Eric H.
