I haven't plotted it out with a light, but i too have a BTM (piggyback on stock ignition). I've modified my stock vacuum unit to basically be just an advance. 0psi base timing is 19-20 BTDC. MSD Gain is under a 1/4 degree. Pressure Regulator limits boost seen by BTM to 12psi. I also have a FMIC, but this was setup before that.
The actual gain (degrees/psi pointed to at the knob), is not really as accurate as MSD would like you to belive, since it's all analog. However, the knob in the cabin lets you change your timing to suit the day. When it's cold out, i barely need retard, and when it's hot out, i need a tad more. Also you should hook up an LED to your APC, so you know when it knocks (other than it's putting your face into the dash)
Your chart of ineffective maps showed starting at 25 deg. BTDC. If this is true, i bet you need timing lower than 16 BTDC by 5psi, i bet this is where it's pinging. Keven K spoke of using the OE vacuum diaphram and BTM, so the vac would dump it's 5psi retard in early, like it does, and btm would continue to retard slowly.
